10 Best Single Issue Comics Stories You Might Not Have Read
6. Doom Patrol #45 - The Beard Hunter
People often overlook that comics are supposed to be fun first and foremost. When it comes to the work of Grant Morrison, readers often expect meta-deconstructions, big ideas surrounding philosophy and spirituality and long-form storytelling - a heavy punk-inspired ethos usually underpinning it all. This style has made them one of the most celebrated writers in the history of the medium.
But now and then, Morrison will cut loose and present the reader with something silly, fun and with a much lighter tone. About two-thirds of the way through their run-on Doom Patrol, after the characters have battled fictional realities, The Brother Hood of Dada, and a character claiming to be God by way of Jack the Ripper, the heroes encounter the Beard Hunter.
Set entirely inside a grocery store the story features Niles Calder, without the aid of his team or his purpose-built battle wheelchair, engaging in a do or die battle with the titular Punisher analogue - a man who kills people before shaving off their offending facial hair and collecting it as a trophy.
The book is a fun little aside between ground-breaking story arcs that often goes unnoticed.
