Xander began his TV journey as a lovable goofball. Despite the show’s writers doing their best to portray Xander as the heart of The Scoobies, his behaviour often drew ire from the fans, growing more so with repeated viewing. His treatment of the women in his life, self-pity, and thin “nice guy” charade, were particularly criticised.

Boom! Studios went a step further and turned Xander into the comic’s current Big Bad.
Xander broods around the school, jealously observes relationships, and laments not being “good enough for anyone” on his emo blog. While this version of the character is more sympathetic than the TV source, he is still angry that he can’t make Buffy like him in “that” way.
After falling for Drusilla’s catfishing, he gives his neck over to The Mistress. Xander’s body is dumped on Giles’ doorstep. Drusilla did not complete the siring, leaving Xander “in between death and demon”.
Willow initially saves Xander using the sole tie, however,
after Willow is trapped in agony due to the spell, Xander relinquishes the soul
within him. Underground, a now fully demon Xander amasses a vampire cult ready
to go to war with his former friends…
