10 Characters Who Replaced Captain America

7. Patriot

Bucky Barnes as Captain America
Marvel Comics

When Willaim Naslund was killed in action, fellow WWII hero Patriot stepped in to replace him as Captain America.

Jeffrey Mace was a reporter for the Daily Bugle who was inspired by Captain America to become a superhero. Like a lot of heroes at the time, his only power was being pretty good at punching, but he did OK for himself.

Patriot helped the All-Winners Squad stop the assassination of JFK and afterwards took up the shield as the third Captain America. Along with his sidekick Bucky (actually a man named Fred Davis who had taken up the role when Naslund replaced Cap), he formed a new team of superheroes called the Liberty Legion.

Mace served as Captain America for several years, even gaining a new partner along the way. When Bucky was shot during a mission, they were saved by Betsy Ross, a new superhero called Golden Girl. Bucky retired after that and Golden Girl became Captain America's new partner (mirroring the events of the original comics).

Jeffrey Mace retired as Captain America in 1949. He married Betsy and the two moved to the small town of Glendale. He reappeared in the 80's and reunited with the original Captain America, only to die from cancer soon after.
