10 Comic Book Superheroes Who Created Their Own Worst Enemy

5. Aquaman And Black Mantra

Aquaman is often the butt of many jokes in the DC universe. After all, what good can a man who talks to fish do in a fight? But Aquaman has proven again and again that he is one of the strongest members of the Justice League.

But this doesn't mean that Aquaman hasn't made severe mistakes in his life defending the earth and all its oceans. In the case of a young boy named David, Aquaman made a single mistake that would create one of the biggest monsters in all of the seven seas, as well as one of Aquaman's biggest rivals, Black Manta.

In one of Black Manta's origin stories, he was an autistic boy living in Baltimore, Maryland, who loved playing near the sea. But one day (while playing near the ocean), David was kidnapped by cruel pirates that made him work aboard their ship for an unspecified amount of time. Apparently, on one fateful day, young David saw the King of the Sea, Aquaman, swimming by with a pod of dolphins.

David screamed for help, but Aquaman didn't hear the poor boy, leading to the young David developing a deep hatred for Aquaman. David was eventually able to escape into the ocean he once loved after killing one of his captors.

David then viewed the ocean, and subsequently Aquaman, as emotionless and uncaring, leading the young boy down the dark path into becoming the ferocious man known across the world as Black Manta.
