10 Comics To Read Before Batman vs Superman Movie

3. Superman/Batman (2003-11)

Written and illustrated by various. The monthly series Superman/Batman is full of individual stories that could influence the Batman vs. Superman film, but the overall dynamic of respect, change, and trust in the relationship between the titular heroes is the more important source material. World's Finest Comics is the spiritual antecedent to this series, and the recently-announced New 52 series Batman/Superman will continue the tradition. Jeph Loeb (The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, Hush) is among the many noted writers who take on DC's Big 2, but some of the best issues are written by Jim Kelly and Len Wein. Their stories tend to reimagine Silver Age tales from the World's Finest series and examine them in a fresh, modern light. How will it influence Batman vs. Superman? This is the go-to series for Big 2 tales, and the modern renovation is more likely to gel with Man of Steel than anything from the World's Finest run, which in typical Silver Age fashion tend to be a lot more jolly than the modern reincarnations. Again, there are probably a good many individual stories that could serve as source material for a film pairing. But the relationship between Superman and Batman that spans the entire series could provide a dynamic that would work really well in a film universe, as it's interesting on its own but also viable to raw out over multiple films, eventually culminating in a Justice League blockbuster.
