10 Comics That Took Their Characters To New Heights In 2017
3. The Mighty Thor
It’s now been more than three years since Dr. Jane Foster - cancer patient and long-time love interest to the God of Thunder - took on the mantle of Thor as her own, and 2017 was her most triumphant year so far in the super-powered role.
Jason Aaron has been the man at the helm of The Mighty Thor since 2012, and it was he that led the segue from the Thor we knew and loved - long since dubbed Unworthy to wield Mjolnir - into Foster’s run as the Lady of Lightning, whom we’re loving all the same.
Last year was typified by the grand and at-times incredibly badass defiance in her portrayal as the Odinson. Quite literally, too, as it was the ruler of Asgard whose face she had to fly in for him to understand women can also throw hammers at godly speeds.
If there were any more apt or epic comic book demonstrations against misogyny and those unwilling to accept this kind of change in 2017, we’d like to see them.
Foster’s Thor has been every bit the guardian of the Nine Realms her predecessor was, aided by the awesome illustrations of artists like Matt Wilson and Russell Dauterman, even showcasing the kind of skills one might argue are superior to He Who Is Now Unworthy.
At its foundation, though, The Mighty Thor has been emotionally driven by Foster’s insistence to wield Mjolnir despite the fact it's accelerating her cancer; her epic might in 2017 was just a big bonus.
