10 Crazy Marvel Teams You Won’t Believe Existed

7. The Ape-vengers

Marvel Comics

For some reason, comic books have always been obsessed with primates. In the story, JLApe, the Justice League turned into simians. Superman regularly fights an ape. Flash regularly fights an ape. Even the first supervillain ever, the Ultra-Humanite, was an ape!

Because the comic industry has a fascination with these hominids, it was inevitable that Marvel would make a story where every character was an ape.

In the four-part mini-series, Marvel's Apes, a simian-like mutant called the Gibbon is accidentally transported to a primate-centred universe and meets the world's greatest superheroes, the Ape-Vengers. They are composed of Iron Mandrill, Thorangutan of Apesgard, Gro-rilla, and Captain America.

As weird as this story is at this point, the reader cannot prepare for how insane it gets. You see, this "Cap" isn't an ape. He's a shapeshifting, Uber-vampire Nazi monster called Baron Blood who replaced the real Captain America decades ago. (Okay, the reader was expecting a twist but that seems a bit overkill.)

Baron Blood's introduction comes out of nowhere. Wasn't this story already weird enough with the monkeys? Why did it need vampires?!
