10 Dystopian Futures Of Comic Book Superheroes

1. The Dark Knight Returns

X-Men Days Of Future Past
DC Comics

The daddy of them all. The Dark Knight Returns is what we talk about when we talk about dystopian superhero comic books. Along with Alan Moore's Watchmen, Frank Miller's classic changed the landscape of superhero books as we know them - as well as completely revitalising the Bat, bringing back the darkness after years of camp and Adam West.

Anyone who knows comics knows The Dark Knight Returns and its influence. Emerging from retirement after years of boredom and growing a moustache, an elderly Batman does violent battle with a weird Two-Face, an aged Joker and a vastly changed political climate.

Inadvertently setting the table for Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice, Miller's classic has inspired no small number of sequels, rip-offs, direct adaptations and movies, and it shows no sign of losing its lustre anytime soon.

Even now - and after its many imitators and adaptations, too - The Dark Knight Returns remains one of the best Batman stories and one of the greatest comic books of all time. Of any time, dystopian or otherwise.

Are there any other timelines out there that we missed? Be sure to let us know in the comments below!
