10 Essential Horror Comics Fans Must Read
1. Uzumaki
No comic has had a more lasting, terrifying effect on the comic reading world than Junji Ito's magnum opus: Uzumaki.
The story - for those of you unaware - centres around a small town in the Japanese countryside named Kurozu-cho, and on a young girl named Kirie, as she witnesses the strange and horrific events that, slowly but surely, engulf her home in a Lovecraftian nightmare.
It doesn't sound very scary when you put it on paper, but you'd be surprised by how far Ito goes with the concept, twisting homes, animals, and of course the human body, to resemble this seemingly innocuous symbol. The symbol envelops the entire town, either driving everyone mad or killing them to spread the spiral's wicked gospel.
The art is at its best, going from hauntingly beautiful to just flat out haunting. Add onto that the mother of all chilling endings, and you have a horror story for the ages. Uzumaki is more than just a really great horror story, it is nothing short of essential.
