When DC Comics revealed that the magical con-man, John Constantine, would play a bigger role in the New 52, readers were skeptical. The Scouser's stories work better when he's on his own so why would the company upset the apple cart?

Even though the New 52 was a bit hit-and-miss, the occult detective's series', Constantine and Justice League Dark, were met with nothing but praise. And when John Constantine: Hellblazer was released in 2020 under the Sandman Universe label, it was hailed as one of the best comics of the year.

That's why fans were shocked when writer, Simon Spurrier, revealed that DC chose to "not extend" the title beyond 12 issues. (For the record, "not extend" is the nicest way to say a comic is being canned.)

Despite the fact John Constantine: Hellblazer was only meant to last a dozen issues, the creative team and readers assumed it would continue beyond that due to receiving universal acclaim.

Every single person who worked on the title said it was one of, if not, the best story they had worked on, making its cancellation all the more heartbreaking.
