10 Famous Comics You Won't Believe Were Cancelled

6. Jack Kirby's Fourth World Saga

X Men By Marcio Takara
DC Comics

Jack Kirby is a legend in the comic industry for creating or co-creating hundreds of famous characters including Captain America, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four.

However, the King of Comics was proudest of his Fourth World mythology, which originally developed over four titles; Mister Miracle, The New Gods, The Forever People, and Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen. Kirby created all of these titles himself from scratch save for Jimmy Olsen but incorporated many defining characters in the series when he took over including Darkseid.

These 1970s comics revolved around a race of space deities called The New Gods. Not only did these series' debut many iconic characters like Big Barda, Female Furies, Granny Goodness, Orion, and DeSaad, but they dramatically expanded the DC Comics mythos.

That's why it is such a shame that all four of these series were scrapped so quickly. New Gods and Forever People were done and dusted after 11 issues, less than a year after publication. Jimmy Olsen concluded three years after Kirby left. (Weirdly, the last issue he wrote had Superman facing off against the voice of Mr. Potato Head, Don Rickles.)

Mister Miracle faired the best of the four, but only lasted 25 issues. Weird to think how such a beloved part of the DC mythos suffered such a bumpy beginning.
