10 Famous Comics You Won't Believe Were Cancelled
5. SHIELD
Jonathan Hickman's 2010 series, SHIELD, was not just a great comic - it was a game-changer. Since the clandestine agency debuted in the 1960s, it was always assumed SHIELD was founded during the 20th century.
But Hickman retconned the counter-terrorism establishment's origin, revealing it was forged in Ancient Egypt. For millennia, SHIELD had battled the Celestials, the Brood, and other cosmic threats while humanity was none the wiser.
Not only that, many historic figures were members of SHIELD. Leonardo Da Vinci built a time machine to safeguard humanity. Galileo used his inventions to stop Galactus from invading. Isaac Newton was the Grandmaster of SHIELD (and a wizard).
This revision was so drastic, you may assume it was kept separate from the modern stories. On the contrary, SHIELD's new origin was embraced and incorporated into other comics including Doctor Strange and the Fantastic Four.
Unfortunately, Hickman was repurposed for another comic and his SHIELD series drew to a close after only 10 issues. Even though it had a brief stint, it's incredible to see how much the series shook up the Marvel mythology.
