10 Greatest Marvel Comics Of The 21st Century

7. Runaways (2003)

Planet Hulk
Marvel Comics

Written by Brian K. Vaughan, Runaways is one of Marvel's best comics when it comes to introducing new characters. Since the 80s, Marvel has almost solely relied on long-established properties. They believe that readers like the characters they know and often don't try to expand on their roster. Runaways proved without a doubt that readers will always be interested in strong new characters.

The premise is that a group of mostly teenage kids are forced to get together whenever their parents have some kind of meeting, but discover their parents are all super villains. As the title of the book suggests, the kids run away. They also team up with a dinosaur from the 87th century named Old Lace, and the appearance of a dinosaur improves any comic.

The first 24 issues of this run are amazing. Unfortunately, after Vaughan left the comic, the Runaways comics took a huge dip in quality and have never been able to recapture the spirit of the original run.

Although the Runaways exist in the Marvel Universe, they don't interact with the other characters very often. For new readers, Runaways is a good way to be introduced to the idea of superhero comics. An adaptation of Runaways is making its way to Hulu and the first 24 issues are a must read before then.
