10 Greatest Marvel Comics Of The 21st Century
4. Captain America (2005)
Captain America is a tough character to write. He falls into the same category that makes Superman a difficult character to make interesting with an unflappable moral compass. But Captain America Vol.5 made him one of the most compelling characters in the Marvel universe.
The art by Steve Epting is what immediately brings readers in. He expertly knows how to layout some of the best action scenes in comics and he turned Captain America into one of the most visually interesting fighters in the Marvel Universe.
Starting with introducing the Winter Soldier, the story only picks up from that point. Issue #25 delivered a devastating story, showing Captain America shot and killed while in custody after surrendering during Civil War.
From there, Bucky steps up to become a new kind of Captain America. Bucky's run as Captain America was so successful that fans are still anxiously waiting to see him take over in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (it's no accident that he's gotten his hands on the shield in every movie so far).
The arc as a whole took Captain America from being a bland, stoic leader and turned him into one of Marvel's flagship characters.
