10 Horror Comics You Must Read If You Love The Walking Dead
2. American Vampire
Scott Snyder may be best known by comics fans for his iconic run on Batman (creating the Court of Owls and everything alongside frequent collaborator Greg Capullo), but American Vampire is his real masterpiece.
Published by DC Comics under their Vertigo imprint, American Vampire is the story of the vampire Skinner Sweet and his progeny, Pearl Jones.
Taking in decades of mythology, American Vampire details the evolution of the... American vampire, documenting different species and sub-sects of the creature. Through it all, Skinner and Pearl remain the focus, following their story across the decades.
This is a very different kind of horror story to The Walking Dead, but treats its subject with the same seriousness. Illustrated by Rafael Albuquerque, this horror epic can be regarded among the greatest vampire stories ever told.
Such are American Vampire's horror bona-fides that it counts none other than Stephen King himself among its guest writers. There was talk, for a while, that King would write an episode of The Walking Dead himself, but that never did materialize. Vampires one, zombies nil.
