10 Insane Alternate Versions Of The X-Men You Won't Believe Exist
6. Mutant Heralds Of Asgard
One of those crossovers devised by pulling names out of a hat, during the mid-eighties Marvel had the genius idea of mashing together the X-Men and Thor in Asgardian Wars, a story arc that spanned 1985's New Mutants Special and Uncanny X-Men Annual.
Loki - prior to being played by Tom Hiddleston/anybody really caring about him - decided to kidnap Storm and the New Mutants, planning to turn the de-powered weather goddess into the new God of Thunder. Things didn't work out, Storm stopped wearing that boss winged helmet over her mohawk, and everybody went on with their lives as if nothing ever happened (as is the norm for the aftermath of crossover events).
Except that didn't happen in one alternate reality, as outlined in What If... The X-Men Had Stayed In Asgard? In this version of events, half the mutants got sent back to Earth and the rest stayed in the Norse... dimension... thing, with Wolfsbane falling for the prince of the Asgardian wolves, and Rogue shacking up with a member of the Warriors Three.
Loki, meanwhile, managed to pull through with his plan to make Storm the new Thor, since his real brother had been turned into a frog. Storm became Queen of Asgard, and thus a story that sounds like the worst kind of fan fiction reached a happy ending.
