When Beast believed the X-Men had lost their way, he worried the team would disband. He could have given them a pep talk but this is a comic book so he had to devise a far more elaborate solution. He builds a time-machine so the X-Men from the past are transported to the present timeline.

Beast assumes the current X-Men will be inspired if they see their teenage selves when they were at their most idealistic.

When the teenage Iceman comments on how beautiful Colossus' sister looks, Jean Grey points out he doesn't have to pretend he fancies her. Confused by what she means, Jean confesses that she knows Iceman is gay since she can read his mind.

Iceman feels violated that Jean probed his private thoughts without her permission, but she sees this as a perfect opportunity for him to officially come out to his teammates.

Although coming out of the closet can very stressful, this situation is a whole new level of awkward because the teenage the modern day Iceman had lived decades longer in the closet. Basically, Iceman came out to himself, and only after having his privacy violated by a close friend.
