10 More X-Men Fates Worse Than Death

8. Being Manipulated To Cause Genocide - Uncanny X-Men #350 (1997)

The card-wielding Gambit may be one of the most popular X-Men, but there was a time when Remy LeBeau was a lowly thief, a thug, and a supervillain. Before living under Professor X's roof, the red-eyed Cajun worked alongside the nefarious Mister Sinister. Sinister had such trust in him, the mad geneticist allowed Gambit to assemble his mercenary team, The Marauders.

Not only that, Remy was personally tasked with leading The Marauders down to the sewer tunnels, where the Morlocks lived. However, Remy had no idea that Sinister's team were ordered to exterminate the Morlocks and was absolutely horrified to see The Marauders slaughtering hundreds of innocent mutants, including children. Gambit was so ashamed that he was manipulated to lead a genocide, he abandoned Sinister's crusade and joined forces with the X-Men, hoping to redeem himself.

However, when Gambit's involvement in The Mutant Massacre came to light in Uncanny X-Men #350, his teammates could no longer trust him and thus, kicked him out of the group. Even though the X-Men eventually forgave Gambit and allowed him to rejoin their ranks, it's safe to say Gambit won't be forgiving himself any time soon.
