10 Most Disastrous Comic Book Misprints

1. Wolverine #131: Logan Is A Racist

The most disastrous misprint of all time came out of some sloppy editing that almost ruined the reputation of Marvel and the incredible Brian K. Vaughan, and it all happened when Wolverine uttered a hateful slur. Though we all know Wolverine is a bit of a dick, taking him to the level of despicable Nazi is a bit much, especially considering that the slur in question doesn’t even make sense in context.

Thanks to some needless edits and a last-minute fax, Vaughan’s sentence “the assassin known as Sabertooth” was irrevocably changed in the final copy of the comic. While the editor wanted the word killer in place of assassin – for really no reason at all – the letterer had no time for common sense and thought he wanted the slur “kike.”

No one proofread the issue and off it went to the stands, into the hands of people that wondered when Wolverine had turned so racist and if they missed something about Sabertooth’s backstory.

In the end, Marvel did attempt a recall but understandably many of the issues were kept by fans who thought the comic would be worth something one day. The bad press ended up hurting Marvel’s reputation, but we’re still waiting to hear which charity Wolverine ended up donating to in order to make amends.
