10 Most Ironic Deaths In Comics History
7. The Death Of Nightcrawler
The omega mutants might be the most fascinating of all other kinds of mutants, but this doesn't necessarily mean that others, like Nightcrawler, aren't as impactful, either. Nightcrawler, himself, actually plays an important role in saving Hope Summers during “Second Coming," where she and Cable return to the present.
Upon discovering this, Cyclops dispatches a team to find them, who later encounter intense enemy resistance in their efforts to do so. This inevitably leads to Nightcrawler standing off against Bastion, who is within inches of killing Hope. To save her, Nightcrawler quickly teleports in-between them, grabs Hope, and finally teleports away with her in hand to Utopia.
This, however, ends up killing Nightcrawler, who becomes impaled by Bastion's arm mid-teleportation. Following his death, it's then learned that Kurt has gone to the afterlife- where he is seen at odds with himself about being dead.
This contemplation doesn't last for long, however, as Kurt discovers that his father, Azazel, is in heaven. In learning this, Kurt discovers that the Bamfs were created to steal away mutants that Azazel had planned to use in his efforts to obtain total dominion over heaven. Kurt proceeds to then stop him but Azazel eventually escapes by teleporting to Earth - to which Kurt follows after him.
Ironically, no one would've known about the dangers with the Bamfs without Kurt dying first - thus leading him to save the X-Men not once but twice.
