10 Most Powerful Sorcerers In DC Comics
1. Doctor Fate
First appearing in 1940, Doctor Fate is the Justice Society of America's resident magic-man and DC's sorcerer supreme. With super-strength, flight, invulnerability, endless magical capabilities, and a longer legacy than most, Doctor Fate may also be one of DC's most powerful superheroes - even managing to best Superman and the Spectre.
The original Doctor Fate was the son of a famed archaeologist who was excavating the Valley of Ur in Mesopotamia. The young Kent Nelson uncovered the tomb of a Lord of Order known as Nabu whilst exploring. Nabu, waking from his sleep, accidentally killed Kent's father - but decided to train Kent in the ways of magic as a form of repayment. Armed with the all-powerful Helmet of Nabu, the wizard sent Kent out a mission to restore order to the world and become Earth's most powerful sorcerer.
With World War II devastating the world, Doctor Fate provided support for the allies and founded the Justice Society of America. Operating from a window and doorless Tower in Salem with his wife, future Doctor Fate Inza Cramer, this superhero paved the way for more magical heroes to appear on DC's pages, battling occult foes and otherworldly threats.
With more than ten characters donning the Helmet since the 1940s, Doctor Fate has also been DC's most consistent magical player, providing support to the Justice League, Batman, and more across the decades. Regardless of who wears the Helm, Fate will hold a key place in the DC Universe as its greatest sorcerer.
With his immediately recognisable costume, iconic golden Helmet, and powerful skillset, it's no surprise that Doctor Fate has also appeared in various animated series, TV shows such as Smallville and Stargirl, and is set to appear in the upcoming Black Adam movie, played by James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan.
