10 Notable Career Changes Of Famous Comic Book Characters

2. J. Jonah Jameson €“ Mayor

Even if you€™re not a comics fan, you€™re probably all aware of Daily Bugle publisher and Spider-Man€™s not-quite nemesis J. Jonah Jameson. Since Spidey€™s beginnings, Jameson has always been there to write scathing articles on the web-slinger and declare him a public menace. However, it was after Brand New Day that Jameson€™s time at the Bugle ended. When the paper was hit by hard times, Jameson was forced to stop everyone€™s checks to build the capital up to keep the paper running. After a verbal confrontation with Peter Parker, Jameson suffered a heart attack. While he was in the hospital, Jameson€™s wife Marla sold the Bugle to competitor Dexter Bennet, who renames the paper The D.B. Although the buyout infuriated Jameson, causing problems with his wife and causing him to lose his temper when he hears Bennet€™s name, it also presented him with a new opportunity. Because of the devastation wreaked by Menace, the position of mayor became open. Despite common sense dictating that this would be a huge mistake, Jameson is elected mayor of New York City. This didn€™t stop his crusade against Spider-Man, and if you thought he was bad when he managed a newspaper, just imagine him managing a whole city. One of his first acts was forming an Anti-Spider Squad to capture Spider-Man, but they prove less than effective as Spider-Man continued to swing around helping people. Jameson€™s tenure as mayor has been a rocky one, from a popularity drop and a scandal involving the Vulture to the death of his wife at the hands of Alistair Smythe, the Spider-Slayer. Still, he continues to press on and he was even able to work with Spider-Man briefly (not knowing that it was Otto Octavius€™ mind in Spider-Man€™s body). However, after Spider-Man blackmails Jameson by threatening to reveal that Jameson sanctioned Spider-Man to murder Smythe after he escaped from his execution, Jameson went back to hating the web-slinger. There€™s not much to say about Jameson being mayor other than reiterating that he€™s still the same blowhard he€™s always been. While I believe that deep down he does care about protecting the city, his stubbornness and bias towards Spider-Man leads him to taking actions that would benefit him more than the citizens of New York. He has had some moments of humility, like when he blamed himself for his wife€™s death rather than Spider-Man, but overall Jameson is a perfect example of what happens when someone places what they want above anyone else. Not only that, but whenever anyone tries to call him out on his mistakes, he usually places the blame on someone else. Typical Jameson.
