10 Scariest Ever Batman Comics Stories
5. Prey
The usual rogues gallery are nowhere to be found in this creepy, cinematic follow-up to Year One. Instead, Batman attempts to fend off the mindgames of demented psychiatrist Doctor Hugo Strange, who is determined to unmask the vigilante and prove his own superiority.
Another Tales Of The Dark Knight outing, this five-part psychological thriller puts poor Bats through the wringer once more, as Strange scrambles the detective's brains, turns his own allies against him and sets a samurai sword-wielding psychopath on his tail (think the Mutant Ninja Turtles' Shredder, except even more purple) for the physical stuff.
Written by Doug Moench and illustrated by Paul Gulacy, Prey is sweaty, lurid and frighteningly violent. Even the Batman himself is depicted as a terrifying figure, his methods far more brutal than readers might be accustomed to seeing. Which leaves us questioning whether the villain of the piece might actually be.... right, in this case? Well, until Hugo goes full Strange, that is.
