10 Shocking Comics Events That Changed Characters Forever
7. Peter Erases His Marriage - One More Day
Peter and Mary Jane at this point had been married for well over two decades. Their marriage and relationship wasn't the most interesting thing on the face of the Earth, but having a stable and loving marriage to come home to was definitely something that made one of the all time sad sack superheroes life just that little bit brighter.
One More Day wasn't an out of nowhere event. Marvel had expressed their boredom with Spidey having a stable home life for some time before then. The nineties especially were filled with failed attempt to shake up their relationship, from them finding out that Ben Reilly was somehow the REAL Peter Parker and our Peter was the clone (but then wasn't), to Mary Jane getting pregnant but then suffering a miscarriage because Marvel chickened out of what would have been just a bit too much of a shakeup to the status quo.
All of this led up to One More Day, in which Marvel finally pulled the plug on Spider-Man being married entirely. But instead of handling even this with any degree of maturity with, say, the moral grey implications of divorce, they instead had Mephisto erase the marriage from existence in a bargain with Peter to save his Aunt May.
Despite this being one of the most infamous Spider-Man stories in the characters' history (and that is one VAST threshold) Marvel has been determined for over a decade to die on this hill, which makes it easily one of the most impactful storylines in Spider-Man history.
Joy.
