There were a few good years where Marvel just had no idea what to do with the Punisher. Writers had felt like the character was going stale, so they decided to kill him off.

But then someone decided to bring him back, but not as the normal Punisher we all know and love, but as a Punisher that had become an agent of Heaven and used magic angel guns in order to hunt down and kill any demons that sprang up from the pits of Hell.

To make it extra ridiculous, the angel who thought of this idea was supposed to be the guardian angel for Frank's family. And since we all know how that went, the angel decided to make things right by having Frank become a demon hunter.

The run was not good in the slightest, and thankfully things went back to normal for Frank not too long after, leading to some of his most critically acclaimed stories.
