10 Superheroes Screwed Over By Reboots
7. Peter Parker
Spider-Man has had many reboots, many little more than re-establishment of the classic status quo because Spidey is Marvel's biggest cash cow so he'd better look exactly the same all the time.
Unfortunately, those pesky writers kept coming along to give him new adventures where he kept - gasp! - developing as a character. He even got married to Mary Jane, imagine that. But since one of the great traditions of the Spider-Man canon is half honoring/half pissing on the legacy of Gerry Conway, this could not stand any longer.
So, when Joe Quesada became EIC at Marvel and took over Spidey in particular, he decided to undo the whole thing with the reboot story One More Day. Now, was this accomplished via the morally murky waters of a divorce settlement where the dirty laundry of both parties are aired for all to see and deeper, darker layers of these two characters are revealed?
Nope, that might actually be pretty cool. Instead Aunt May gets shot by one of Kingpin's assassins after the events of Civil War revealed Peter's identity, and Pete gives up his marriage to Mary Jane to Mephisto in order to save her.
As a result, both him and Mary Jane have been in character limbo ever since, with Spidey in particular being completely in the muck as a character, a hopeless victim of the status quo for years to come.
