10 Superheroes Who Broke Bad
6. Angel
Warren Worthington III used to be an adventurer like you until he took a harpoon to the wing.
Angel was impaled while trying to defend the underground community of Morlocks from a gang of evil mutants. The damage was so severe that both his wings had to be amputated, putting his superhero career to a pretty definitive end.
That is until Apocalypse came along. The villain gave Warren a new set of metal wings and greatly boosted his powers. In return, Warren agreed to serve Apocalypse as his Horseman of Death. As an added bonus, Apocalypse also brainwashed him to hate the X-Men.
Death attacked his former friends and nearly killed him, but when Iceman faked his own death, it broke Warren's programming and he returned to the team.
As Archangel, Warren continued to serve with the X-Men, but sometimes struggled with his darker impulses. This came to a head when he joined the covert mutant group X-Force.
After the team killed a reborn Apocalypse, Warren's mental health began to deteriorate more and more. When he finally snapped, he declared himself Dark Angel and took his former master's place, leading Apocalypse's army in an attempt to destroy humanity.
He was stopped by his girlfriend Psylocke, who stabbed him with a Celestial Life Seed. This not only killed him, but also completely rewrote his DNA, essentially making him a new person. Still better than breaking up via text though.
