10 Terrifying Comics About Real Life Crimes

2. The Hunting Accident: A True Story Of Crime And Poetry By David L. Carlson

My Friend Dahmer
First Second

The Hunting Accident is very similar to the famous graphic novel Maus, in the sense that it is the story of a father telling his son a cautionary tale of his past.

Though it differs from Maus as it's not the father warning the son of the dangers of other men, but the dangers of taking yourself down a dark path that you can't escape from.

David L. Carlson tells the story of a Gangster from Chicago who was blinded during a shootout - which is referred to as a hunting accident. He is caught by the police due to this occurrence and he is sentenced to imprisonment within the Stateville Prison.

It is in prison that he learns to live with his new found disability through the tutelage of a real life killer called Nathan Leopold.

As he begins to learn he starts to gain the gift of writing and he initiates what will become the career that his son knows him for: He becomes a poet.

The Hunting Accident is not only a story of warning but it can also be seen as a story of hope blossoming in darkness.
