Stephanie Brown is the daughter of Arthur Brown, the third-rate Batman villain called the Cluemaster. He spent most of her childhood in prison or away from his family. When he claimed to have returned rehabilitated but simply returned to crime without leaving clues, Stephanie realized something needs to be done. She tailored a costume for herself and called herself The Spoiler. She knew where her father and his cronies were hiding out and left clues for the police and Batman to catch them.

Stephanie joined Tim Drake's Robin in capturing her father for the first time and was annoyed that the young hero knew her identity but she didn’t know his. When the Cluemaster got out of prison during the Knightquest storyline, Spoiler went after her father again and ran into Robin, who allowed her to work with him. They went their separate ways and Spoiler was kidnapped by the Gully Carson Gang, who had worked with Cluemaster in the past. Cluemaster alerted Batman and Robin from prison and they saved her.

Robin and Spoiler tried dating, and he helped her through pregnancy with an ex-boyfriend, with Stephanie giving the child up for adoption. But because he could not reveal his identity to her, Tim's frequent absences due to Robin business, and some perceived infidelity, they broke up on several occasions.
