10 Things Marvel Wants You To Forget About The X-Men
1. Inhumans Are The New Mutants
Inhumans are a subset of humans that have had their genes experimented on by an alien race. They’re able to get their powers with the aid of Terrigen Mist. Sounds like mutants, right? No? Well, Marvel wanted the readers to think so.
Once the MCU became the powerhouse it is today, one of their comics’ most popular teams still had their film rights locked in at Fox. Marvel - specifically Ike Perlmutter - weren't fans. So, the Inhumans were picked as the substitute, and the mutant family began to suffer as a result.
Suddenly, Avenger members Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were no longer mutants, Inhuman numbers increased globally after the Infinity event, and X-Men related books were reduced along with the Fantastic Four, another casualty of the dispute between Marvel and Fox.
The storyline Inhumans Vs. X-Men, which kicked off in 2016, was meant to be a sort of symbolic passing of the torch. Instead, the Inhumans were turned into a kind of X-Men parody. Marvel stepped away from what made the Inhumans exclusive - that being the unique stories from their Royal status - and turned them into less compelling versions of the X-Men.
However, once the Inhumans’ TV show was cancelled, the writing was on the wall. Fans just couldn't get behind the Inhumans over Marvel’s previously adored mutants, and now the X-Men are in the midst of a major comeback.
