10 Things Marvel Wants You To Forget About The X-Men

2. The Ultimate Universe

The Ultimate line was created by Marvel in 2000. The purpose was for new readers to jump in without bothering with decades' worth of convoluted continuity. It was also designed to take a more realistic approach. It didn’t take long for that to be forgotten about, and it was then treated as a place for creators to let their imaginations run free. Somewhere along the line, those imaginations got a little too carried away.

As well as the inappropriate relationship between the siblings Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, the big event Ultimatum happened.

Marvel wanted to create a clear separation between the main universe and the Ultimate Universe. Apparently, this had to be achieved by gruesomely killing the X-Men systematically. The characters on the casualty list included Wolverine, Cyclops, Charles Xavier, Magneto, Beast, and Angel, and it was genuinely grim.

A lot of moments were out of character, such as Magneto snapping Xavier’s neck. Some were even over-the-top such as Magneto obliterating Wolverine multiple times before Wolverine died. Most of the book came across as an uncomfortable glorification of gore.
