10 Times Spider-Man Was The DARKEST Marvel Comic

9. Killing Finisher - Amazing Spider-Man Annual #5

Spider-Man Broken
Marvel Comics

In comparison to some of his other Marvel counterparts, Spider-Man is a wholesome and largely innocent kind of hero. With that sense of innocence comes a set list of rules that the wall-crawler has to obey from comic to comic, with the most important of these being his strict view on killing.

One of the reasons why Spidey has become so beloved is his near-tireless efforts to ensure his foes are webbed up safely - even if they go out of their way to make his life a living hell at times.

The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #5 does away with this entirely, introducing readers to the short-lived villain of Finisher. Hired by Red Skull, this doomed baddie decides that launching missiles at the insanely-agile Spider-Man is the best way of ensuring his destruction in the climax of the fight. Spidey obviously dodges out of the way with ease, but this run of the mill encounter was thrown on its head when readers saw their hero throw one of these missiles right back at his foe.

In what has gone on to be a real collector's item, this 1968 comic was a shockingly dark turn for a series that had been fun and lighthearted up until that point.
