10 Most Tragic Deaths In X-Men History

8. Colossus

Piotr Rasputin, better known as Colossus, went through a lot of turmoil in the €˜90s and early 2000s. First, he reunited with his long-lost brother Mikhail in another dimension, but when Colossus and the X-Men brought Mikhail back to Earth, Mikhail€™s sanity snapped. He became the new leader of the Morlocks and eventually teleported the group to another world. Then, Colossus€™ parents were killed by the Russian government when they kidnapped his sister Illyana to genetically modify her to fight the mutant Soul Skinner. If that wasn€™t bad enough, Illyana later became one of the first victims of the Legacy Virus. Emotionally distraught, he left the X-Men to join Magneto€™s Acolytes, although he left after their space station Avalon was destroyed and Magneto was rendered brain-dead. Hoping to find the one person left that he thought really cared about him, Colossus went looking for his girlfriend Kitty Pryde, but when he found her lovingly embracing her Excalibur teammate Peter Wisdom, Colossus went into a rage and almost killed Wisdom. After accepting that Kitty was with Wisdom, Colossus joined Excalibur and was a member until they disbanded. As mentioned earlier, Moira MacTaggert mentally transferred her research to Professor Xavier before she died. Using this research, Beast was able to synthesize a cure, although it could only be activated through the death of a mutant. Not to content to stand by as he had when his sister had died, Colossus decided that no more mutants should have to die. Injecting himself with the cure, his powers flared and spread the cure airborne throughout the atmosphere, eradicating the disease. Unfortunately, as Beast had said, the recipient wouldn€™t survive, and Colossus died saving others from dying the way his sister had. Colossus was able to save his brethren from dying the way his sister did, but for him to die to do it was extremely tragic. After all the emotional turmoil he went through with his sister€™s death, his brother€™s corruption and the woman he loved choosing someone else, he left this world only knowing that what he did would save lives. Yes, it was noble, but for a nice guy like Colossus to leave like that, it seems ill-befitting of him. He deserved more than that.
