Marvel don't exactly have the best record when it comes to portraying domestic violence, but of all the attempts to address the issue, there is one storyline that stands out from the others. No, it's not Hank and Janet again, this time it's Tony Stark and a sentient armour.

Tony's suit gained sentience at the turn of the millennium and for a short time, it was a match made in heaven. Unfortunately, his new friend would prove a little too hard to keep in check. The armour grew obsessed with its creator, deactivating Jocasta so the two could be alone, sabotaging Tony's date and straight up abusing him.

Concerned by what his armour had done, Stark tried hard to put it out of action but ultimately failed. The armour whisked Stark away to a remote island, where he was tied to a tree and viciously beaten.

The armour relents on its actions, while confessing its disturbing affection. Tony later suffers a heart attack, causing the armour to rip out its own mechanical heart and replaces his heart with it.

It's clear what the writers were trying to do here, but was a sentient piece of technology really the best way to do it?
