10 Unrevealed Secrets About The Baxter Building

6. Individual Modifications

Baxter Building Fantastic Four
Marvel Comics

The headquarters of the Fantastic Four required some special modifications to some of its key areas, including living quarters. Everything in Ben’s bedroom has to be oversized to accommodate his massive form and the lack of fine dexterity with his four massive fingers. His bed needed to be reinforced to deal with his 500lb (226.8 kg) weight, and Reed found it necessary to create everyday objects like television remotes, telephones, drinking cups, and utensils out of sturdier material to stop the Thing from shattering them with the merest touch.

It was necessary for Richards to make the entire bedroom of the Human Torch flame resistant. For example, his uniform, his mattress, pillows, and bed linens are all made from unstable molecules which resist his flames, and Storm's furniture and fixtures are all made out of high-fire ceramics that resist Johnny’s flame. In the early days, much of Johnny’s room was covered in asbestos before the detrimental effects of the material were known.

Modifications were needed to be made to certain other areas as well. Ben’s workout area would often see him pressing weights of multiple tons, and the floor beneath him would have buckled under the weight if it were not sufficiently reinforced. Additionally, the weight of the Pogoplane alone in the hanger would require additional reinforcement to the 35th floor.
