Baxter Building Fantastic Four
Marvel Comics

The top five sections of the Baxter Building are completely air-tight with every door into the space serving as an airlock. Atmospheric and environmental support is provided in the elevator areas between upper floors 2 through 4. The windows are two feet (0.61 m) thick structures with composite glass and plastic elements that mirrored the outside world, and the exterior walls are armored and mirror-clad to give the building a uniform façade.

There is a buffer zone between the upper five floors and the rest of the building. This allows the floors the Fantastic Four inhabit to rapidly disconnect from the rest of the building and raise it through magnetic repulsion, similar to Iron Man’s weapons. This is controlled from the Command Center on the 31st floor, and was in part created to placate the building’s overbearing manager Walter Collins. The buffer zone contains a mechanical floor that provides HVAC and elevator support equipment for the lower 30 floors.

Of the four elevators in the Baxter Building, three of them serve floors 1 through 30. The fourth is an express elevator straight to the Fantastic Four’s headquarters on floors 31 through 35. The elevators are called by devices in the belt buckles in the FF’s uniforms, and concealed scanners in the elevators scan all visitors for hidden weapons and devices. The elevator can also be stopped in midshaft while the team prepares for any unwanted visitors.
