10 Unrevealed Secrets About The Baxter Building

4. There’s A Missile In The Building!

Baxter Building Fantastic Four
Marvel Comics

When Reed Richards moved the Fantastic Four into the Baxter Building, he created a number of transportation devices for the team to get them to where they needed to go. Floor 35 is the hanger for the various versions of the Fantasticars, including the original “flying bathtub” and the various individual Sky Cycles. All the vehicles are carried on lifts to a roof which opens to reveal launch pads.

The most interesting and somewhat disconcerting vehicle is the ICBM in a reinforced silo at the corner of the building. This passenger inter-continental ballistic missile could send the team anywhere on Earth in a matter of minutes. The ICBM is stored and launches from a heavily insulted silo that muffles the sound and has anti-vibration walls, and the exhaust pipes lead the fire from the missile’s launch down the building and into the Hudson River.

A portion of Floor 34 is the rocket launch and command and control rooms, and portions of 35 are maintenance areas for the vehicles and the rocket. On the roof, a hatch slides on a pivoting arm to reveal the opening for the rocket to launch. That said, the ICBM was eventually replaced with a space-capable rocket ship.
