10 Untouchable Comics Heroes (Who Shockingly Died)

1. Superman (The Death Of Superman)

Spider-Man Skulls
DC Comics

Superheroes died before, and superheroes DEFINITELY died after, but Superman was never really one of them. That was part of the appeal, part of the fantasy, they couldn't just KILL him. And if they did, it had to be a big damn deal.

And oh boy, what a big deal it was when they finally did it.

Sure, many criticized the methods by which they did so (killing him off in a slugfight with a brand new villain right out of the blue), but there's no denying that everyone bought up this issue when it came out, making it the highest selling comic DC had at the time. A trend that only continued as the series went on afterwards. But Superman's sales never really jumped up to the heights it reached when DC decided to kill him off. Kinda explains a lot about their business practices since, huh?

There had been dark stuff at DC before, but this was the big turning point. When the most untouchable comic book character of all time was reminded of his own mortality in the most thorough way possible.
