7. Batman - Final Crisis
There is a LOT to unpack about Final Crisis, from its often nonsensical story, to its clunky dialogue, to Batman getting fried alive by Darkseid, to it treating the new gods like ACTUAL gods...
Wait what happened to Batman again?
Yeah, if there's any moment that defines this event comic, it's definitely the moment where Batman faces off against Darkseid. It... well I don't want to say it DOESN'T go well for him, he stops Darkseid after all. But that wacky ol' Darkseid just can't go down without taking someone with him, can he? So after Batman breaks his one rule to never use guns by shooting Darkseid with a specially made anti-new gods bullet, Darkseid puts the last of his strength into blasting Batman with his omega beams. This, of course, reduces Batman to a pile of ash.
Batman had never really died before this moment, so it was just a total shock to the system to see it happen so suddenly, especially when it looked like he had just won. Of course he wasn't really dead - just blasted backwards through time - but that's neither here nor there.
