10 Utterly Ridiculous Comic Book Characters
3. Ambush Bug
Unlike most characters, Ambush Bug is intentionally a silly creation from the mind of Keith Giffen. Premiering in DC Comics Presents #52, Irwin Schwab had a full-bodied green suit with long orange antennae that allowed him to teleport via small robot bugs. Initially, he was a “villain” with very heavy quotation marks who was little more than a nuisance to Superman. Schwab’s costumed apparently became affixed to his body and his ability to teleport became internal. He also decided to become a “hero.”
For a brief period, Ambush Bug inexplicably became popular, at least with editor Julius Schwartz. He appeared again in DC Comics Presents and was given his own four-part series where he adopted a doll as his “son” and sidekick, Cheeks, the Toy Wonder. He was very briefly part of the Justice League during the 52 series and moved in with the Doom Patrol in issue #9 of their last series.
In the New 52, Ambush Bug appeared as a news reporter for “Channel 52” which ran in the back of all the comic books. It discussed the in-universe events in the form of a news program. The Bug was the only one that would appear in costume and had full knowledge that he was a comic book character in a comic book.
