One of the big changes to the comic industry in the 90's was the introduction of some real competition for Marvel and DC. A group of writers had left Marvel to start their own company called Image and its books were proving hugely popular.

Archie Comics was also having a lot of success with their Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off comic and in 1998 the two companies decided to do a crossover.

The thing is, Image was known for its dark and gritty comics filled with violence. Its best seller was Spawn, a comic about an undead CIA agent who had come back from Hell to kill murderers and paedophiles. It's not a concept that really gels well with a cartoon hedgehog and his animal pals.

Still, that didn't stop them from going ahead with it and on the cover of Sonic Super Special #7 (the world's most way past cool comic), Sonic and Spawn appeared together, promising the crossover that at least some fans had probably maybe been waiting for.

And indeed, they did cross over... for a single page. Sonic and friends found themselves transported to the Image Universe where they met Spawn and asked if he wanted to team up with them. He said no and promptly left.

They did get to team up with monstrous supercop Savage Dragon and the HIV-positive Shadowhawk though, so at least there's that.
