Magneto's time in the X-Men came to a close after he took it upon himself to execute the sorceress Zaladene. However, instead of jumping right back into villainy, he decided to retire first.

Unfortunately, that retirement didn't come in the form of the aforementioned retirement home with the floating spoons of Jell-O. Instead, tired of the constant war between humans and mutants, Magneto decided to seclude himself in his own personal space station Asteroid M (a different one to the one that crashed in the previous entry).

His retirement didn't last long though before he was contacted by the Acolytes, a group of mutant criminals who were on the run from SHIELD and worshipped Magneto as a "mutant messiah". Erik decided to house the Acolytes on Asteroid M, but faced pressure from SHIELD to return them to Earth.

In retaliation, Magneto used his powers to surround his base with nuclear missiles, all pointed directly at Earth. It was a pretty clear message, anyone who attacked Magneto risked the complete annihilation of all life on the planet.

It was an act that started an escalation of conflict that would lead to one of the Master of Magnetism's most iconic moments.

I was just a mild-mannered NCTJ accredited journalist until one day I found out the truth... that I could share my nerdy ramblings with people on the internet! It's just like mumbling to myself on the train, but without all the strange looks.
