10 Worst Things That Ever Happened To The Thing

2. He Was Left Scarred - Fantastic FourĀ #374 (1993)

The Thing Mutation
Marvel Comics

After Johnny Storm learned there was a warrant out for his arrest, the youngest Fantastic Four member went on the run. His best friend, Spider-Man, worried that evading the law would only make the Human Torch's situation worse and so, urged him to turn himself in.

When the hot-headed hero resisted, Spidey convinced The Secret Defenders, which consisted of the Incredible Hulk, Wolverine, and Ghost Rider, to bring Johnny to the authorities.

Unsurprisingly, this whole ordeal led to the Secret Defenders and the Fantastic Four duking it out, which climaxed with Wolverine slashing the Thing's face. Despite Ben sturdy husk, Wolvie's unbreakable claws sliced throw the rocky superhero's head, leaving him horrifically scarred. The wound was so severe, the stone-skinned colossus was left facially disfigured for three whole years. Because his injury left his face vulnerable, Ben had to wear a helmet during battle, which he found humiliating.

After encountering a psychokinetic mutant called Hyperstorm in Fantastic Four #409, Ben's face was healed, returning him to normal. (Well, not normal. He's a still a giant walking rock - but you know what I mean.)
