While the majority of the stories in Powers of X are separated into four different timelines, Powers of X #3 is based solely during The War section of the comic. Although it might seem strange for Hickman to focus on one timeline when so much is going on, it's completely worth it as we find out what the mutants are after all along.

A ragtag team of Chimeras (mutants that have been created by Mr. Sinister and can use multiple powers at once), Apocalypse and his newest version of the Four Horsemen - which includes Wolverine, Cypher, Dane/Frost and Xorn - join forces to try and obtain information that could be key to the future of mutant-kind. Standing in their way is Nimrod The Lesser and Omega Sentinel.

The team of mutants attack the Temple of Concordance, but are met by Omega Sentinel and her squadron of mutant killing machines. However, their battle doesn't last too long as one of the Chimera's unleashes the black hole in Xorn's head, killing everyone around them.

However, it turns out that this was just a distraction to allow time for Apocalypse, Wolverine and Cypher to get the information they came for. Although Apocalypse dies fighting Nimrod The Lesser, Wolverine and Cypher are able to get back to their base and give the information to Moira X, who has been released from stasis.

With key information about when Nimrod might arrive in the future uploaded into her brain, Wolverine guts her so she can start another life cycle with that knowledge intact.
