20 Best Comics Moments In 2013

9. Maro Takes Out The Khund (Green Lantern Corps #23)

Maro Vs Khund Van Jensen and Robert Venditti co-wrote this excellent story arc and what makes it so good is that they took the time to show readers why the newest Green Lantern recruits had been chosen by the rings - and in this issue we get a sparkling example of that. John Stewart initially doubted all of the newest lantern recruits in this arc but they showed him that they are more than the useless, potential-free rookies that he first took them for. The best instance of this involved Maro - a native of planet Rhoon who is a mute and lacks confidence and mettle, making him arguably the biggest doubt in Stewart's view, as he initially came across as something of a wimp, though the ring saw him as someone who had "the ability to overcome great fear." Maro's shining moment in this issue came when the Khund were attacking and had injured John Stewart. They were closing in on him saying things like "don't let him up" and "cut his face off." All of a sudden, Maro essentially found his voice, as a huge construct of his own face appeared and screamed out a sonic blast so powerful that it took out all of the Khund. Stewart responded with "good job, Maro. The Khund heard you loud and clear" and, in keeping with his character, by the end of the issue he admits his mistake in judging the recruits prematurely.
