7 Current Sci-Fi Comics That Are Way More Interesting Than Guardians Of The Galaxy
7. The Wake
The elevator pitch for this comic is so good it's impossible not use it: The Wake is Alien underwater. (Let's just forget Alien: Resurrection ever happened, 'kay?) The protagonist is Lee, a marine biologist who specializes in whales and is recruited by a mysterious government agent to join him on a secret underwater station among with a few other select guests including a folklore expert and a big game hunter. The reason that they're all gathered there? The station has itself a merman. Not a pretty mermaid with a glittering, scaly tail and a clamshell bra, but a fang-toothed, ancient blue monster who's got a taste for human blood. The story flits around from the station at the present day to primitive man millennia ago and a far-flung future Earth plagued by tidal waves and almost completely flooded, seemingly populated by a sole hang-glider and her dolphin buddy. The story is tense and fascinating, bringing in influences from ancient mythology to the mysteries of whale song, and writer Scott Snyder & artist Sean Murphy knock it out of the park every issue with well-defined characters and grim but grand widescreen panels. I'd say The Wake would make a great movie, but I think it's already perfect as a comic.
