5. A Death in the Family: The Last Flight of a Robin
To put it bluntly, The second Robin (Jason Todd) gets beaten practically to death by the Joker with a crowbar. Covered in blood and tattered tights, Robin then gets blown up by a bomb. This is one of the most defining moments in the history of Batman in comics. It is also quite disturbing and extremely brutal. The scenes of Robin being beaten while the Joker laughs and cracks jokes has been seen time and again in flashbacks and memories ever since. Possibly the darkest part of this sordid tale is the now legendary fact that in 1988, Batman fans actually voted for this to happen by calling a special phone number. Fans becoming literary murderers pulled us all into the reality that where the death of Robin is concerned, we are no better than those that Batman has always tried to stop. Kinda cool in a scary way wouldn't you say?
