8 Comic Book Villains Humiliated By Wolverine
4. The Hellfire Club - Dark Phoenix Saga
Wolverine proved to be the perfect addition to the X-Men by the time Chris Claremont took the reigns on the comic in the mid seventies, but if you were to pinpoint the exact moment he became a true icon, it'd have to be his one-man-rampage against the Hellfire Club, which took place during Claremont and John Byrne's iconic Dark Phoenix Saga.
Even casual X-Men fans should know the ins and outs of the story by now. Jean Grey seemingly dies saving the X-Men in a space mission gone wrong, only to return as the wrathful Phoenix. Jean finds herself manipulated by the shadowy organisation known as the Hellfire Club, and becomes their "Black Queen" thanks to some mental tinkering from Mastermind and Emma Frost.
Naturally, the X-Men decide to infiltrate the Hellfire Club's headquarters in a bid to rescue Jean and snap her out of her mental funk. The plan does not go according to plan though; the X-Men are easily dispatched by the Club's members like they were nothing, and it looks as though the day is lost.
Then we cut to Wolverine.
John Byrne's panel of Logan knee deep in the sewers, claws extended and ready to fight, is one of the most iconic in comics history. With a quick, "Now it's my turn!", Wolvie proceeds to turn his claws on the Hellfire Club's goons, but he singles out one for particular embarrassment.
Taking a leaf out of Clint Eastwood's iconic monologue in Dirty Harry, Wolverine coldly explains to a surviving member of the Club that he has no chance of taking him down, which turns the gunman into a shivering wreck.
Yep, no question. Wolverine really is the best at what he does.
