Marvel's Fresh Start: 8 Reasons To Be Concerned
3. Legacy Didn't Even Last A Year
It only seems like it was yesterday when Marvel Legacy came around, and - to an extent - it was. Releasing in August last year under the 'Every Story is an Event' tagline, Legacy promised to do to Marvel what Rebirth had done to DC. It even had a strong debut, with Jason Aaron's one-shot encapsulating the Marvel vibe of yesteryear with an interesting tease for the future.
While this 'Fresh Start' is meant to build upon what Legacy has already started, the change in branding does speak for how that particular relaunch faired. The tagline was misjudged, coming in a milieu fatigued by Civil Wars and Secret Empires, and the event as a whole was mired by controversy surrounding its variant covers, with retailers being forced to engage in behind-the-scenes gymnastics in order to qualify for Legacy's USP - that being the actual covers themselves.
The need for a refresh was apparent, but it didn't have to replace Legacy outright. If anything, the idea behind Marvel's most recent event was along the right lines, with the concept of finding the balance between new and old having worked a treat for DC after the calamity of the New 52. The execution just hasn't come together though, and while a Fresh Start could remedy that situation easily, the only things getting changed are (as you'll have guessed already), the numberings.
