Marvel's Fresh Start: 8 Reasons To Be Concerned

4. The Cancellation Massacre Still Lingers

To hammer home the tragedy of Marvel's 2017 even further, the company announced a raft of cancellations to ongoing books in their January solicitations. These were all fan-favourite comics too, with Kelly Thompson's Hawkeye the most surprising of all the titles given the axe.

This wasn't just a one-off for Marvel though - Black Panther and The Crew was infamously given two issues before the publisher announced it would end upon its sixth issue, and countless others were left to fend for themselves in the market without any assistance. It's a strategy emblematic of Marvel's ignorance (or arrogance), in respect to how the market works; books aren't publicised, creators are given little time to prove a comic's worth, and they're cancelled as a result.

With this 'fresh start', there's nothing to say that this won't continue to be the case. The two series announced so far have been the subject of a big marketing push overnight, but as for those other comics making up the relaunch, it remains to be seen if Marvel will support them properly.

At the end of the day, that is the big thing they need to address, because carrying on like this - as well as laying the blame for cancelled books squarely with fans navigating what is, at its core, an archaic retailing system - just isn't fair.
